Meaningful Ways to Personally and Purposefully Honor God This Holy Weekend

The Most Holy Weekend is here. Many people reflect on their spiritual journey during Holy Week, giving thanks and gratitude to Christ for His ultimate sacrifice for us.

This time of the year reminds us of love, sacrifice, faith, and hope. It's a chance to deepen your faith and strengthen your connection with God.

Here are some inspiring and personal ways you can honor Him this weekend.

Engage in Prayer and Meditation

One of the most genuine ways to honor God is through prayer, reflection, and meditation. These practices serve as a profound means of connecting with the divine and deepening one’s spiritual journey.

Carve out some time from your weekend to create a quiet space where you can be alone with Him, free from the distractions and noise of everyday life. This sacred time allows for a personal dialogue with God, where you can express your gratitude, seek guidance, and find solace in His presence.

Consider setting the ambiance of your chosen space by lighting a candle or playing soft instrumental music that resonates with your soul. You may also wish to include meaningful objects, such as a cherished book of scripture, a journal for your thoughts, or even natural elements like flowers or stones that remind you of God’s creation. There are millions of Christians honoring God and celebrating His resurrection this weekend. Make this weekend a personal time where you show Him honor in a way that is personal and meaningful to you.

Prayer

As you settle into this tranquil environment, take a few moments to breathe deeply, allowing your mind to quiet and your heart to open. Begin your prayer by acknowledging God’s greatness and love for us through His Son.

It is a thoughtful time to consider the meaning of this weekend seriously. Jesus had been abused and crucified in the most horrific way, betrayed by many who claimed they would love and follow Him forever. Now He lies in the Tomb, wrapped in burial cloth by Joseph of Arimathea, and those who loved and followed Him are in mourning, filled with grief.

It is a time to open up to God and tell Him what this ultimate sacrifice and the grace and love He shows to you each day truly mean to you. Along with the salvation given to us through His sacrifice, take the time to tell God what you will do in your life with this gift. How will His sacrifice shape your Walk as a Christian? How has His brutal crucifixion and resurrection strengthened your faith and understanding in Him? Make it Personal. Make it Meaningful. Make it Truthful.

After your prayer, transition into a period of reflection and meditation. This can involve reading a passage from the Bible or another spiritual text that speaks to you, followed by a time of silence where you can contemplate its meaning and how it applies to your life. Notice how you feel after your intimate time with God this Holy Weekend. Do you feel sadness or grief? Find passages on sadness and grief, such as:

"The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

(Matthew 5:4, NIV).

"They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."

Or are you feeling thankful? Or grateful? Find passages to help you reflect on these feelings, such as:

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

"Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts."

Make this a time truly dedicated to God. Reflect on passages based on how you are feeling in that very moment. If you do not know where to begin, here are two fantastic resources to help you get started:

All you need to do is type your feelings at the top of the page in the search area, and the page will be flooded with verses relating to how you feel at that moment. You can change the Bible version easily on each page to align with your Bible version preference. Utilize these tools daily to help you grow deeper in your faith.

Biblical Meditation

Biblical Meditation can be a powerful and valuable way to honor God during this Holiest of Weekends. This sacred time, often marked by reflection and spiritual renewal, invites individuals to delve deeper into their faith and connection with the divine.

Engaging in Biblical Meditation creates a serene space where thoughts can be centered on prayer, gratitude, and contemplation of God’s love and sacrifice. As you settle into a quiet environment, free from distractions, you can focus on the significance of this weekend, which commemorates profound events in the spiritual narrative, such as the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

By dedicating time to meditate, you can explore themes of forgiveness, redemption, and hope, which are central to the observance of this holy period. Visualizing the journey of Christ, reflecting on the messages of compassion and mercy, and seeking understanding of your spiritual path can enrich your experience and deepen your faith.

You may read passages that resonate with the weekend's themes, allowing their meanings to wash over you as you meditate. These themes could include Silence, Hope, Renewal, and Forgiveness. Use the above resources to find verses aligning with these themes and meditate deeply on their meanings.

This practice honors God and fosters a greater awareness of His presence in your life. By embracing meditation during this Holiest of Weekends, you invite a transformative experience that can lead to spiritual growth and a renewed commitment to living out your faith with intention and love.

God meant for us to engage with Him daily and often. Engaging in these practices regularly can transform daily life into a sanctuary for your soul, enriching your life with peace, purpose, and divine connection.

Consider dedicating 15-30 minutes daily to heartfelt prayer and/or Biblical Meditation. During this time, express gratitude for at least five blessings, such as your family, friends, health, or opportunities. This intentional practice sets a reflective tone and opens your heart for spiritual guidance.

Volunteer for a Cause

Serving others is a direct way to honor God and put your faith into action. Look for local charities or organizations that need support this holy weekend.

Whether you serve meals at a homeless shelter or volunteer at a local food bank, your efforts can make a huge difference. For instance, serving at a local food bank can provide meals for hundreds of needy families.

Here are a few resources to help you find charity work near you:

These acts of kindness embody the teachings of Jesus and allow you to step outside your comfort zone. It’s a practical way to positively impact your community or communities and people worldwide and witness the joy of giving.

Attend a Local Worship Service

Participating in a local worship service can significantly impact your spiritual life. This holy weekend, gather with fellow believers to strengthen your faith.

Whether you attend your regular church or venture out to explore a new congregation, the communal worship experience can significantly rejuvenate your spirit and provide a sense of belonging.

Engaging in worship is not merely a passive activity; it is an active participation in a shared expression of faith and devotion. This engagement can take many forms, including singing hymns that uplift the soul, participating in heartfelt prayers that connect you to the divine, and enjoying fellowship with others who share similar beliefs and values. These interactions can foster a deep sense of community and support, which is often essential for personal spiritual growth.

Additionally, the fellowship that occurs during and after services—whether through informal conversations, organized group activities, or community service projects—plays a crucial role in building relationships and nurturing spiritual growth. These connections can lead to lasting friendships, support networks, and opportunities for mentorship, all of which contribute to a more enriching spiritual life.

Engaging with others in meaningful discussions about faith, morality, and life challenges can also provide new perspectives and insights, deepening one’s understanding of their beliefs and the world around them.

Also, remember that, should situations such as work, health, or transportation issues prevent you from attending a local church regularly, many local churches stream their services online. Gathering online will help you keep a connection to a church and is an excellent way to decide if you would like to make a particular church your church home.

For instance, my church home is Connection Christian Church. They offer insightful and Biblically accurate messages, and you can find their Sunday services here: https://www.youtube.com/@ConnectionChristian

Or start here and type in your area to find online church services in your area:

You will find more links to finding local and online Church services in the Links Section at the end of this article.

"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” (Matthew 18:20, NASB). Attending church online or in person allows us to meet and worship with the followers of Jesus. Whether a regular attendee or a newcomer, participating in communal worship can be a transformative experience that revitalizes your spirit and strengthens your faith.

When you cannot attend your local church, remember you have many online options to guide you in your spiritual walk with God. Embracing these opportunities can lead to a more fulfilling and connected spiritual journey.

Create a Sacred Space at Home

Consider designating a special spot in your home as a prayer or reflection area. In this dedicated sanctuary, you can retreat from the chaos of daily life and connect with your inner self or a higher power.

This sacred space can be a personal haven for contemplation, meditation, or prayer, allowing you to cultivate a more profound sense of peace and spirituality. When you see this space, it will also serve as a reminder to honor God daily. You want to create a space that fills you with joy and encourages you to spend time in your personal space dedicated to God.

To enhance this area, you might include your favorite scriptures, which can be framed or displayed in a way that is visually appealing and easily accessible for daily reading or inspiration. In my personal space, I keep a digital photo frame that consistently shows me revolving Bible verses. One of these verses will often capture my heart and attention, which may be the one I go to God with in prayer and meditation on that particular day.

In addition to scriptures, incorporating candles or string lights can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The soft flicker of candlelight or the gentle lighting of string lights adds a serene ambiance and symbolizes the light of hope and guidance. You may choose scented candles that evoke calmness and tranquility, such as lavender or sandalwood, to further enhance your experience.

Moreover, consider adding symbols that resonate with you—these could be items such as a cross, items of a Biblical nature, or any objects that hold significant meaning in your spiritual journey. Each element in this space should reflect your tastes and represent your faith journey, creating an environment uniquely yours.

To further personalize your prayer or reflection area, you might want to include comfortable seating, such as a cushion or a small chair, or even your bed, where you can sit or relax with soft cushions for extended periods without discomfort. A small table or shelf can also be beneficial for holding your scriptures, candles, and any other items you wish to keep close at hand during your moments of reflection.

Besides the digital photo frame, I keep a collection of many different Bible versions, study Bibles, and faith-filled books on a cute bookshelf my husband and I sanded, refinished, and painted. We created this bookshelf specifically for our Biblical study area. I also keep photos of family members who believed and encouraged me to always focus on God. I utilize my favorite colors, a wax burner burning my favorite scents, and keep several journals close to record notes as I pray, reflect, and meditate on the Word of God.

The overall atmosphere of this sacred space should be personal and encourage you to engage with God daily. By thoughtfully curating this area, you are creating a physical space for prayer and reflection and fostering a deeper connection to your spiritual practice, allowing you to engage with Scripture meaningfully.

Fasting

Fasting is a meaningful practice that can enhance spiritual discipline and awareness. While the Biblical concept of Fasting focused on abstaining from food, it may not always be possible. We have to consider the circumstances of each individual before determining what we can safely fast from.

For example, those with particular health issues may need to eat frequently, or those whose food is not consistent need to eat when food is available to them. Some people may be on medications requiring them to take them with food. In such circumstances, we need to consider fasting options unrelated to food.

So, before considering fasting from food, speak with your doctor. Food fasting is not for everyone. Fasting may be dangerous to those with specific health issues, on certain medications, or with particular health needs. Again, always speak with your doctor first to understand any risks related to you and your health before beginning any dietary, exercise, or fasting changes.

If it is safe this weekend, consider fasting from food or specific foods. Still, you might also consider fasting from technology or other distractions that divert your attention from God. Here is a list of things you might consider fasting from to focus solely on God this weekend:

Fasting was practiced often in the Bible and showed dedication and honor to God. Throughout the scriptures, fasting is frequently depicted as a spiritual discipline that believers engage in to deepen their relationship with the Lord, seek His guidance, and express their repentance and humility.

In both the Old and New Testaments, fasting is presented not merely as abstaining from food, but as a profound commitment to spiritual growth and an earnest desire to align oneself with God’s will.

We see numerous examples of fasting in the Old Testament to seek divine intervention. For instance, in the book of Jonah, the people of Nineveh fasted in response to Jonah's warning of impending judgment, demonstrating their sincere desire for God's mercy and forgiveness.

Similarly, King David fasted during times of distress, particularly when he pleaded for the life of his sick child, showcasing how fasting can express deep sorrow and earnest prayer.

Moreover, the Day of Atonement, known as Yom Kippur, was established as a day of fasting and repentance, where the Israelites would humble themselves before God, seeking atonement for their sins. This practice illustrates how fasting was integral to the community's spiritual life, collectively acknowledging their need for God’s grace and forgiveness.

In the New Testament, fasting continues to hold significant importance. Jesus Himself fasted for forty days in the wilderness, which served as a preparation for His ministry. He set an example for His followers about the power of fasting in spiritual warfare and reliance on God.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about fasting, emphasizing that it should be done discreetly and with a sincere heart, rather than for the sake of public recognition. This highlights the personal nature of fasting as a form of devotion that seeks to honor God rather than to gain human approval.

Here are a few Biblical Fasting Guides to help get you started and you will find more in the Links Section at the end of this article:

Again, fasting does not have to be from food. You may fast from anything distracting you on your daily journey with God. You will find links to food and non-food fasting in the Links Section at the end of this article.

Fasting from these things is a powerful reminder of prioritizing spiritual nourishment over physical sustenance or personal enjoyment, ultimately reflecting a heart that seeks to honor and glorify God above all else.

Connect with Nature

Spending time in nature is a beautiful reminder of God’s creation, inviting us to pause and reflect on the intricate beauty surrounding us. Whether hiking along a winding trail, sitting quietly in a park, enjoying the fresh air from your balcony, or simply relaxing in your backyard, immersing yourself in the natural world can foster a profound worship and appreciation for the Creator. Each setting offers a unique experience, allowing us to connect with the divine in various ways.

When hiking through a lush forest, the towering trees and vibrant flora can evoke a sense of awe, reminding us of the majesty of God’s handiwork. The sounds of birds chirping, leaves rustling in the breeze, and the distant trickle of a stream create a symphony of nature that resonates deeply within our souls. As we navigate the trails, we may find ourselves contemplating the vastness of creation and our place within it, leading to moments of spiritual reflection and gratitude.

Similarly, sitting in a park offers an opportunity to observe the delicate balance of life. Watching children play, people walking their dogs, and the gentle sway of flowers in the wind can inspire a sense of community and connection. In these moments, we can appreciate the beauty of nature and the relationships that enrich our lives, reinforcing the idea that we are all part of a larger tapestry woven by the Creator.

Even the simple act of sipping tea while on our balcony or in our backyard, gazing at the sky, can become a meditative practice. As the sun sets, the horizon painted in orange and pink hues can serve as a reminder of the daily miracles and beauty that often go unnoticed. This quiet time can become a sacred ritual, where we express our thoughts and prayers, feeling the presence of God in the stillness around us.

Tending to a garden or observing the changing seasons can deepen our understanding of life’s cycles and the Creator's care for all living things. Each petal, each leaf, and each creature reflects the artistry of God, encouraging us to slow down and appreciate the details that often escape our busy lives.

Immersing ourselves in nature enhances our appreciation for the world around us and serves as a powerful reminder of the presence of God in our lives. It can inspire us to worship, reflect, and give thanks for the beauty and complexity of creation, drawing us closer to the heart of the Creator with every experience.

Take this time to reflect on your relationship with God and think about ways to strengthen that bond. Also, spending time in nature has been shown to boost your mood and decrease stress levels, giving this connection an extra benefit.
